Jil Sander Inspired! Brights & Stripes for the Kitchen

30 May

I tend to lean towards black and neutrals when I dress almost always, but Jil Sander’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection made me rethink color and bold stripes for Spring.  I actually bought a practically neon-orange linen button down a few weeks ago from J.Crew just to test out color to see if we “go” together.  The jury is still out because it’s been freezing in Chicago and pale skin and neon orange really don’t mix!!

One place I’m not afraid of color and stripes is in whimsical kitchenware for casual dinners or outdoor parties.  The Jil Sander Collection inspired me to go bold or go home!

Guest Editor: Cindy Augustine on Summer Wines

27 May

When I decided to do a post on great summer wines, I knew that if I enlisted my friend, Cindy Augustine, she would pull out all of the stops (no pun intended) to create an awesome list.  Leave it to Cindy to also rope in one of New York’s hottest restaurant owners and sommeliers, Joe Campanale, to help her!

Here’s what Cindy and Joe had to say:

Blog Spotlight: Alicia Sokol of

26 May

As we all know, the blogsphere is rather huge, so it’s always a thrill for me to find a blog that really speaks to me and my lifestyle.  In fairness, Alicia Sokol of and I share a wonderful longtime friend in common, Melanie, so we were introduced via email!!  But once I logged onto to her site, I was instantly in love. gives you a dinner plan for Sunday through Thursday with a featured in-season, fresh ingredient each week as well as a “Weekend Splurge” recipe.  The site also prepares your weekly shopping list, making it easy to eat healthy, creative meals at home without the stress of planning.

Here’s what Alicia had to say about her site:

Editor Collectibles: Meggan Crum

25 May

When former Accessories Director at W and InStyle Magazines, Meggan Crum, and I grabbed a coffee a few weeks ago to discuss both of our web projects, I asked her what I seem to be asking everyone these days, “Collect anything?”  And to my joy, she said yes!

Meggan started collecting glassware to mix in with her more traditional wine glasses and tumblers a few years ago.  Her collection is very unique and extremely inspiring.  Although the glasses are all very distinct in color, size, and shape, they sit together perfectly.  But would I expect anything less from Meggan?!

For the Host/Hostess

23 May

Now that Summer is almost officially here, more weekends away with friends are here, too.  Whether you’re invited to a friend’s dinner party or to their beach house for the weekend, a host and/or hostess gift is always appreciated.

I absolutely love Terrain’s collection of chalkboard ceramics, like the chalkboard honey pot shown below.  They also carry chalkboard jam jars, vases and creamers which are equally as chic.  Bocce ball takes me back to family games as a little girl in my Auntie Edna’s backyard as well as to the Hamptons at my friends Sarah and Matt’s house.  It’s a game everyone can enjoy and is sure to bring a lot of good times.  The Aquiesse Sunflower candle is a great, fresh summer scent and also comes in large and small tins for traveling.  For any home cook, fresh herbs are useful and fine olive oil is always a luxurious gift that you hate to buy for yourself.
