Explore the Store: Sue Fisher King in San Francisco

31 Aug

Chris and I went to San Francisco last week and, of course, I had to stop by one of my absolute favorite stores, Sue Fisher King. Sue opened her store over 30 years ago and has since been supplying San Francisco with a perfectly curated selection of luxury products for the home.  From tabletop, décor objects, books, and lighting to furniture, bedding & bath, and jewelry, Sue Fisher King has something chic for everyone.

When I walked into the store for the first time, I felt like a kid in a candy store.  Even now, over 10 years later, I still get that same giddy feeling when I enter knowing I’m about to see so many beautiful things in one place!  Sue’s passion for sourcing unique and exclusive products shines through in every corner of her store.  And, lucky for us, she launched her e-commerce site just over a year ago so everyone can shop her store.

While there, I snapped a few photos to show you some of my favorite discoveries this trip.  I should also say, I bought my first piece of Astier de Villatte at Sue Fisher King years and years ago and she still has THE BEST selection I’ve ever seen, including a lot of the pieces I posted a few weeks ago!  I couldn’t resist featuring a few more new pieces I saw last week!

We Love Dim Sum

29 Aug

My dear friend, Ed Baynard, has become one of my biggest conspirators for On My Plate. We can gab about food, websites, art, pop culture, fashion, designers, you name it, for hours at a time! A few weeks ago, we got to talking about Trader Joe’s Trader Ming’s frozen foods – the name makes both of us chuckle every time we say it! Ed was telling me about his favorite Trader Ming’s quick lunches that led to us discussing our favorite Dim Sum spots and Ed impressively preparing his own Dim Sum from scratch!

My favorite restaurant for Dim Sum is San Francisco’s Ton Kiang, which my friend, Pierre Kim, introduced me to years ago when I was living there. Ed’s favorite is NYC’s Excellent Dumpling House on Lafayette near Canal St. I haven’t found good Dim Sum in Chicago yet, so if anyone has suggestions, please, please let me know!

Here are three distinct ways to have Dim Sum. We hope that you will experiment in your kitchen, try new restaurants or steam up some frozen varieties for a quick and delicious meal.

Shopafrolic’s Liz Lange & Jane Wagman Tell Us What’s Cookin’

24 Aug

Sisters Jane Wagman and Liz Lange practically need no introduction.  Since taking the internet by storm a year and a half ago with their super chic and very fun fashion and beauty shopping site, Shopafrolic, they’ve also become Style Trendsetters on OpenSky six months ago with almost 45,000 followers shopping their perfectly curated fashion finds.  Jane and I worked together at Vogue back in the mid-90s and I’ve been admiring her style ever since.  Around that same time, Liz launched Liz Lange Maternity on the Upper East Side and the rest, as they say, is history!  Outside of managing their sites, Jane has a graphic design firm responsible for rebranding Lilly Pulitzer as well as designing many restaurants, websites, logos, catalogs, fashion, and beauty companies and Liz founded Liz Lange Maternity and Liz Lange for Target and recently launched Completely Me by Liz Lange on HSN and The Shopping Channel Canada.

Every year Liz and Jane share a summer house together in the Hamptons with their two families.  With four kids between them, the house is always full of fun, chaos, high energy and hungry appetites.  To aid in their family cooking endeavors, Jane designed two recipe binders for herself and her sister aptly called “Jane’s Famous Recipes” and “Liz’s Famous Recipes” which they both use constantly.  Jane and Liz answered a few questions for On My Plate on what they’ve been cooking this summer.  Here’s what they had to say:

Roxanne Lowit Photographs Food in Berlin

22 Aug

Roxanne Lowit was in Germany last month for Berlin Fashion Week.  She also has a solo photography exhibition, Legendary Privacy:  New York, 1979-1999 at the Kuane, Sudendorf Gallery in Cologne running through September 3rd.  While in Berlin, Roxanne dined at the Michelin star restaurant, FACIL, in the Mandala Hotel and took more stunning food photos to share with On My Plate.

Chef Michael Kempf and his team, Restaurant Manager Manuel Finster, Sommelier Felix Voges, and Pastry Chef Thomas Glaeser have created a menu ripe with artful flavors and impeccable service since 2001.  Although the food is elegantly light fare with an avant-garde approach to flavor combinations and luxury presentations in a stunningly sleek atmosphere, the team prefers their patrons dine in casual clothes to truly relax and enjoy their food experience.  After you view these photos, you’ll appreciate their laid-back approach even more when you see how sophisticated and gorgeous the food is!

And, if you haven’t already, check out Roxanne’s fabulous photos of her incredible meal in Russia a few months ago!

Naeem Khan Inspired: Elegant Tabletop Ideas

19 Aug

Naeem Khan’s evening dresses and gowns and attention to the chicest of chic details are second to none.  The Naeem Khan Fall 2011 Collection blew me away with its ornate beading, ostrich feathers, romantic embroidery and applique, and high glam factor.  I was so inspired, I decided to see how Khan’s collection would translate to a rich, elegant dinner table.  I use my Sabre frosted acrylic demitasse spoons (#3) in color Pearl almost everyday. They make me feel happy and glamorous even when I’m standing in my kitchen stirring my coffee in pjs watching GMA!

I never owned a cake stand (#6) before getting married and I have to say, its changed my home entertaining life!  I use it for fruit tarts, cupcakes, coffee cakes, croissants, you name it.  It makes anything you place on it immediately look elevated (no pun intended) and chic.
