Weekend in London: Food Shopping at Borough Market

31 Oct

Chris and I are on our way back from London today after a quick weekend trip to visit my best friend, Tanya, her husband, Christoph and their adorable cat and dog, Rupert & Oscar, respectively.  Tanya and Christoph have been together for 18 years, while Chris and I are celebrating two years together this week and yet Tanya and I are both expecting our first child within two weeks of one another!!  We haven’t seen each other since since May, so we were way overdue for some quality time before neither of us can travel overseas.

Tanya and I set out on Friday to check out a few stores.  We hit the Westbourne Grove shops first and spent a little too much time in the uber chic baby and children’s store, Marie-Chantal, before heading to lunch at Daylesford Organic, an unbelievable restaurant, bakery, and grocery store.  We were close to famed tabletop and kitchen store, Summerill & Bishop, thanks to GOOP, so we had to pop by and see the store.  It lived up to its fabulous reputation and then some!  The highlight was meeting Octavia, the owner’s twelve-year-old grand niece, who was more mature and engaging than both Tanya and I put together!!  I wish we had had time for manicures and pedicures at the Cowshed Spa & Café right down the street.  Next time for sure!

The pièce-de-résistance was spending all-day Saturday at the Borough Market.  I have never experienced a food market quite like it.  It is truly an original and absolutely delicious!!  They have everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to international cuisine as well as butchers, fishmongers, creameries, confectioneries, and bakers.  There was even a stall for kits to grow your own mushrooms in an old book!

Spooky Treats to Make & Buy

27 Oct

I must confess, I’m not a big fan of dressing up for Halloween and dealing with the masses of people out and about that night.  However! I AM a huge fan of Halloween treats and LOVE this time of year!  I think I’m one of the few people I know who actually likes when it gets dark early.  I feel like the world seems cozier and I love to bundle up.

Since New York City has proven for years and years that Halloween is not just for kids, I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite treats that  will get you in the Halloween spirit, too!  I also came across two recipes that are on my list to try this weekend, Texanerin‘s Whole Grain Chocolate Orange Layer Cake and My Diverse Kitchen‘s adorable Hoot Owl Sugar Cookies.

And who doesn’t love homemade brownies?  What could be better than pulling piping hot Fat Witch brownies out of your oven at home!  It’s just genius that they now sell brownie mix.  Baked By Melissa are the cupcakes to know about.  Roughly bigger than a quarter, the Rainbow mini cupcakes are my favorite!  And they ship nationwide.  I’ve already had a few batches shipped to Chicago and they’ve been divine!!  And I love Lynda Stern‘s chic skull chocolates.  So chic!

For our destination wedding, Chris and I wanted to include old fashioned sugar cookies in our guests’ goodie bags.  After trying several places, we stumbled upon Cheryl’s buttercream frosted sugar cookies.  I now send them to Chris for holidays so we have an excuse to eat them again and again!  Dee-lish!

Orrefors Crystal by Karl Lagerfeld

24 Oct

When Chris and I were in Paris last month, the main window of Colette featured Karl Lagerfeld’s first line of crystal stemware, tumblers, vases, and vessels for Orrefors Sweden.  The stemware and tumblers come in black, milky white, and clear crystal and have built-in coasters.  Watch the Orrefors by Karl Lagerfeld video to hear  Mr. Lagerfeld’s reflections and inspirations on his designs, the making of the pieces, and why he thought to include coasters with each glass.

Bloomingdale’s exclusively carries the line, so click here for product details.

Collectibles: Stuart Mesires’ Vintage Designer Dishware

20 Oct

I met fellow New York fashion transplant, Stuart Mesires, owner of uber-chic luxury vintage ready-to-wear, accessories & jewelry company Ladybug Vintage, through a few different channels in Chicago this year.  A few months ago, we grabbed a bite to swap fashion stories and I learned that her passion for vintage fashion finds did not stop at things you wear.  She has also been collecting china created by fashion designers for over a decade.

Explore the Store: DOMUS in NYC

17 Oct

Moroccan Miniature Tagine Ceramic Glazed Pots: 3 inch round ($22) for salts, pepper, spices, or soy sauce & 4 3/4 inch round ($30) for dipping oils, sauces, butter, olives, tapenade, or jams

When I started at Prada in 2004, we had to walk almost three long avenue blocks over to 9th Avenue from the West Side Highway in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood to grab lunch, if we didn’t want to eat at the office.  There were four of us that regularly had lunch together: me, Paul, Brooks, & Chris.  When Brooks left Prada, our lunch group added other friends, but one thing that remained constant was we all loved popping into DOMUS to say hello to owners Luisa & Nicki and check out their latest, cool, worldly finds.  We considered ourselves DOMUS “regulars” and I personally purchased practically every hostess, birthday, and baby gift there for years as well as great home products for myself.  And we would actually get updates about our former co-workers and lunch group regulars from Luisa and Nicki because they would see and talk to them more often than we did!

Artist Ed Baynard lives right near DOMUS.  On one of our calls a few months ago, Ed exclaimed that he had to email me a photo he had just taken of a wonderful tree outside one of his favorite neighborhood stores that was yarn bombed.  When he mentioned it was in front of DOMUS, we both spent the next few minutes waxing poetic on how much we loved the store and Luisa & Nicki alike!
