Closets & Pantries: Anna Harrington

13 Sep

Chris’ and my dear friend, Anna Harrington, is an artist, fashion industry insider, chef extraordinaire, wife, mother of two adorable boys, entrepreneur, and all-around renaissance woman. And she’s been able to combine her passions and talents into one incredible business, Yummy Time!, guiding children ages 4-8 with hands-on cooking experiences in Manhattan and at the incredible children’s store and activity center, Pomme, in Dumbo .  Anna was a perfect person for Closets & Pantries because I wanted to know what’s in her kitchen and her closet this season!

10 Perfect Days In Paris+ …with designer Vicky Tiel

21 Apr

When Vicky Tiel’s autobiography, It’s All About the Dress, came out last year, I read a glowing review in The Wall Street Journal and told my friend, Ed Baynard, that I wanted to buy it.  He laughed and said that Vicky was an old and dear friend.  Turns out they were ex-pats in Paris together in their early 20s and Ed helped Vicky and her then business partner, Mia Fonssagrives, open their first fashion boutique in St Germain.  Vicky and I have since become friends and I could sit and listen to her stories for hours and hours…and have!!  When Vicky was recently in Paris, I asked if she would give us a “day in the life” recap of her trip because Vicky is a fashion foodie, too!  Her book is filled with recipes received first-hand from the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren.

And be sure to tune in this coming Tuesday, April 25th, for Vicky’s fashion collection debut on HSN.

The Streets of Paris

4 Mar

I woke up today to this fabulous Paris Fashion Week street style recap in my inbox from Vicky Tiel, designer extraordinaire (she designed the red gown Julia Roberts wore to the opera in Pretty Woman!!), author of It’s All About the Dress: What I Learned in Forty Years About Men, Women, Sex and Fashion, and friend.  Ed Baynard received it, too, and we both thought that this was too good not to share. I emailed Vicky back to ask if I could and she typed back, “Share away!”

So if you’re not in Paris, here are Vicky’s observations on what the fashion elite currently are wearing and a few other anecdotes.  And if you haven’t read her book yet, you need to!  It’s better than any reality show on TV!

A Person You Should Know: Chicago’s Judith Dunbar Hines

14 Dec

I first met Judith Dunbar Hines, the City of Chicago’s Director of Culinary Arts & Events, this past summer, when my friends at the Chicago Office of Tourism & Culture had me over to their office for a meeting.  Knowing my obsession with all things food and cooking, they wanted me to meet Judith and see Chicago’s Downtown Farmstand.

My perception before I arrived was that they were going to whisk me through a basic indoor food hall with stalls set up for various farmers to sell their products.  But what I walked into was a full blown hyper-local, delectable grocery store complete with carry-out foods, local soda brands, ethnic foods, incredibly fresh produce and herbs, meats, spices, local cheeses, Lou Malnati’s frozen deep dish pizzas, Frontera tortilla chips from Chicago’s famed chef Rick Bayless, Intelligentsia coffee, Rare Bird preserves…and the list goes on.

The Splendid Jewels of Elizabeth Taylor

12 Dec

A few weeks ago my dear friend, Alvina Patel, the AVP of US PR for Van Cleef & Arpels, was in Chicago for appointments surrounding the mid-November reopening of lavishly elegant Van Cleef & Arpels boutique on North Michigan Avenue.  I also had the pleasure of meeting Alvina’s colleague, Nicolas Luchsinger, the VP of Retail and Director of the Heritage Collection for the brand.  For the Chicago opening, Van Cleef & Arpels flew in some to-die-for heritage pieces to display and I was lucky enough to have both Alvina and Nicolas walk me through the jewels to better understand their rich histories.  We also spoke at length about “The Crown Jewels of Hollywood” auction at Christie’s New York, the legendary jewelry collection of Elizabeth Taylor.  The auctions start tomorrow, December 13th, with an evening sale of Ms. Taylor’s Legendary Jewels.  There are also two fine jewelry Day Sales on Wednesday, December 14th as well as a Haute Couture clothing auction, a Fashion & Accessories auction, and a Fine and Decorative Art & Film Memorabilia (including costumes) auction Wednesday through Friday.

A total of 269 of Elizabeth Taylor’s magnificent jewels have been traveling around the world to seven cities for auction previews since September 15th.  Highlights from the Collection of Elizabeth Taylor began in Moscow and traveled on to London, Los Angeles, Dubai, Geneva, Paris, and Hong Kong before arriving in New York City for the final 10-day preview and sale, which began December 3rd.  The sale is estimated to achieve an excess of $30 million at auction with a portion of the profits going to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, providing funding to AIDS service organizations throughout the world to assist those living with HIV and AIDS.
